THE 2 ESSENTIAL BODY PARTS YOU’RE FORGETTING

Carpal-Tunnel-Hand-Pain-Wrist-Pain-Arm-Pain-Shooting-Pain-Chiropractor-ChiropracticI recently had a client speak to me about weakening grip strength in her hands.  Thinking about all the essential parts of our body we take for granted makes me want to give these parts a little TLC.
How often do you open a jar or container, turn a key, write with a pen, or pass a plate of food across the table?  My bet would be that you do these things every day and that they’re significant parts of your daily routine.  We’re taught from a young age some body basics like stand up straight and bend from the knees to pick up heavy objects. However, what we aren’t taught is that developing proprioception (the body knowing where it is in space), watching your wrist alignment, or working on balance is equally as important.
So what are the 2 essential body parts everyone forgets about? Ankles and wrists!
There are a few simple things everyone can do to stave off injury, developing weakness, or worsening alignment. Here are two easy exercises that can build proprioception, awareness of alignment, and strength.
Mind your wrist. When picking up or passing objects, make sure the hand is in alignment with the forearm and not “drooping.” A good way to keep an eye on this is to make sure you make one long line from forearm through the tip of your fingers. Maybe practice with a can of soup or turning a door knob.
Stand on one foot. A great time to do this is while brushing your teeth in the morning and evening or whenever you’re waiting in line. This will increase proprioception of the foot and ankle and also strengthen small stabilizing muscles throughout the foot, ankle, and lower leg. Some key elements: don’t lock your knee and distribute weight equally across the ball of the foot and the heel.
